People living in the Breckland area are being encouraged to help clean up their neighbourhoods with the help of free graffiti-busting kits.
People living in the Breckland area are being encouraged to help clean up their neighbourhoods with the help of free graffiti-busting kits.
Breckland Council's Pride in Breckland team has bought a stock of kits that can be borrowed free of charge from the council headquarters in Dereham.
Previously people wanting to remove graffiti from their own private property would have had to buy their own equipment.
The free kits can remove graffiti safely from non-porous surfaces such as tiles, metals, painted surfaces, glass and plastics, and they are available to residents, community groups, businesses and other organisations.
The initiative is part of the Pride in Breckland campaign.
Richard Wills, Breckland Pride co-ordinator, said: “The aim of the Pride in Breckland campaign is to clear the streets of graffiti and litter and reduce the associated problems of anti social behaviour. Involving the community makes an immediate and visible impact on an area.
“Breckland has a duty to remove graffiti from publicly owned buildings and street furniture. The council will continue to do this and we encourage people to contact us to report graffiti problems.
“However, this graffiti kits initiative is about encouraging residents to take a pride in and responsibility for their local environment, and enable them to do something about problems quickly. For example, tackling graffiti on their own property or perhaps the village hall. If the graffiti is not on their own property, people should get the permission of the owner before removing it.”
Theresa Hewett, Breckland's executive member for communities, said: “I welcome the graffiti removal kits. The council wants to make it easy for all members of the community to feel that they can help keep the places where they live and work clean and safe.”
