VOLUNTEERS are needed to roll up their sleeves and clear out overgrown ponds in Breckland.
A clearance is being organised to bring forgotten ponds around the district back to life and is in response to concerns from the local community about the condition of the pond in Pond Park, Toftwood.
“The volunteers will help significantly increase the pond's ecological value,” said Richard Wills, coordinator of Pride in Breckland, which is running the project.
“Despite being home to fish, wildfowl and dragonflies, the pond is heavily littered, overgrown with weeds and has a wheeled bin stranded in the middle of its waters. By clearing out the ponds we hope that one day we might even see the return of great crested newts, which are now a protected species.”
Pride in Breckland will enlist the help of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust so that a full ecological survey can be carried out.
The wildlife trust will recommend what needs to be done to each pond to help return them to their natural best.
