Plans to build 69 homes at a former quarry site in Brandon have been given the go-ahead.

Forest Heath district councillors approved the proposals for Mount Pit, off Thetford Road, at a meeting last night.

Eight residents living near the old chalk excavation site and Brandon Town Council had voiced concerns about increased traffic and car parking problems in the area.

But members of Forest Heath's planning committee agreed to the JS Bloor scheme, which would include 17 affordable housing units, open space and a play area, subject to more than 15 conditions. Plans for 45 dwellings at Mount Pit were rejected two years ago.

The development would see 18 lorry loads of material a day being dumped at the former quarry over an 18 month period to raise the ground levels within the site. Councillors told the developer to construct a fence before beginning the infill operation and restricted the work to between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday.
