Outstanding community members were given recognition at a glittering awards ceremony.

Housing provider Flagship gave thanks to those who went the extra mile in the third annual Flagship Good Neighbour Awards at an event in Dunston Hall.

Third place went to Ted Huggins from Mildenhall who was nominated by Tony Goreing for helping his neighbours.

Mr Huggins’ special acts of kindness included collecting pensions and looking after neighbours’ pets when they were away.

He said: “I really didn’t think I’d win anything and I almost forgot the ceremony was today, so I’m thrilled to receive this award.”

Second place went to Meg Marion from Lakenheath who was nominated by her daughter and neighbour Charmaine Johannsen, who wanted to thank her for the help she gave to her and the people in their community.

Ms Johannsen said, “Although Mum is 80 years old, she still gets on her bike each day to do the shopping for neighbours less mobile than herself. She’s so kind and cheers everybody up.”

Ms Marion added: “I am so pleased to have won this award – I did much better than I expected.”

First place went to Josephine Pope of Brandon for her work in the community which included collecting pensions, shopping and prescriptions for her neighbours at Towlers Court. She also accompanied them to the doctors or hospital when needed.

Nominee Edward Baker said: “All the residents think very highly of Josie and we fondly call her the deputy matron. If you have a problem, Josie will always try to help you or give advice.

“She also does a lot of volunteering for various charities, she really believes in helping others. She would be sorely missed by lots of people if she ever left Towlers Court.”

Ms Pope said: “I’m sure there are far more deserving people than me but I would like to say thank you. I’m very grateful.”

Chair of Flagship’s customer board, Brenda Canham, said: “These awards clearly show that community spirit is not dead.

“Today we have celebrated with just a few of our customers who really go the extra mile, creating communities where people want to live.”

Guest presenter was Tim Williams, Archant’s executive development editor.
