As Christmas fast approaches and people are buying presents, Ancient House Museum will be remembering a very special gift - the museum.
The Ancient House was purchased by Prince Frederick Duleep Singh in 1921, and given as a charitable trust to the mayor and corporation of Thetford to become a museum.
He also gave the town a large collection of portraits, some of which can be seen on the walls of the museum today.
Son of Duleep Singh, last Maharajah of the Punjab, Prince Frederick was born in 1868. He lived at Blo Norton Hall, near Thetford, for many years and served with both the Suffolk and Norfolk Yeomanry regiments from 1893-1919. He served in France for two years during the First World War.
On Saturday, January 20 2018 the museum will be celebrating Prince Frederick’s 150th birthday at the museum with a range of free activities.
