24 hour gym could be coming to Thetford
A new gym which allows member access 24 hours a day could be coming to Thetford.
Snap Fitness have submitted a bid to move into the vacant units at the town’s Riverside Leisure Complex.
The gym would be staffed during certain hours of the day but members would be able to enter the building to use the equipment throughout the night.
The member only facility would create four full-time positions and nine part-time and will also include a variety of different classes.
In a supporting document submitted with the application Snap Fitness has detailed how they will monitor the site and noise levels.
The report said: “As well as the access cards, which enable us to have complete visibility to who is using our gym and when, the gym is also covered by a CCTV system.
“The CCTV system can be monitored in the gym whilst it is staffed, and also remotely via an app which is used by the general manager and assistant manager out of hours.”
However the application has sparked some negativity with the £8m complex originally designed to comprise of a cinema, hotel and five restaurant units.
Delivered by Breckland Bridge, a partnership between Breckland Council and The Land Group, development officially opened in December 2016.
The Light Cinema and Travelodge both opened that year and in April last year American bar and grill Grand Central opened its doors.
The rest of the units have remained empty and the gym would fill up units one to three and part of unit four.
Thetford Town Council have raised several objections to the application including the incursion into unit four which could compromise the future let of the site. It also said the application is “in opposition to the vision of a visitor attraction” said the frontage of site “is not being optimised for a visitor economy”.
Town and district councillor Roy Brame said: “Like the town council I would have preferred eating outlets. But from a pragmatic point of view it is better that the complex is full rather than empty.
“We had all hoped that some restaurant would have take it up. But I think the gym is a marvellous idea. It is going to have a great deal of benefits for fitness and health.”
Snap Fitness were approached for comment.
