A former Thetford pupil has organised a 6,000-mile motorbike odyssey from Britain to Dubai - all in the name of charity.
Geoff Warren, 44, will carry out the gruelling trip in aid of the forces charity Help for Heroes after serving with the Coldstream Guards for 16 years.
Travelling with Colin Harker, 47, and Chris Brice, 40, both former members of the Royal Military Police, the group will pass through Egypt and Saudi Arabia, enduring sweltering desert heat and camping under the stars.
The trek, named Destination Dubai 2012, will take two weeks, riding ten hours a day and travelling across eight countries.
Mr Warren, a former Thetford Grammar School pupil, who now lives with his wife and two daughters in Midhurst, West Sussex, said: “Destination Dubai 2012 started out as an idea over a pint of beer about 18 months ago.
“We are all keen bikers, have all seen active duty, and wanted to do something as a small token of gratitude to our service personnel who have suffered life-changing injuries in the line of duty.
“There is no doubt this will be a challenge and a tough one at times, but we wanted to do something worthy of sponsorship and the public’s support. Without all our sponsors, we wouldn’t have got this far so we are hugely grateful for their support.”
The men, who all now work for Armatus Risks, an international close protection company, and have raised more than £5,000 to date, will set off on September 8, carrying all their supplies and tents on their bikes and in a single support vehicle.
Mr Warren’s mother and father, Don and Yvonne Warren, of Spindle Drive, Thetford, said they were not surprised their son had thought up Destination Dubai 2012.
Mrs Warren added: “We are both very proud of what Geoff and his friends are attempting. We wish them the best of luck and know that they will rise to the challenge and raise a huge amount of money.”
The bikes have been donated by Triumph as part of the company’s 100th anniversary.
