A century-and-a-half ago, churches across the region were filled with the voices of parishioners singing hymns and joining in prayer.

Now, almost 160 years on, a church in south Norfolk is welcoming vocals of a different kind.

St Ethelbert’s, based in the village of Wretham, near Thetford, has opened its doors to powerhouse vocalist, Charlotte Peck.

The 26-year-old, whose distinctive sound covers belting ballads and complex vocal acrobatics, is living in the village and using the church due to its unique features.

“I moved here early in the year with my partner,” she said.

“Community has always been very important to me – I am completely a community type of person – and I wanted to get a feel for the village I had moved to.

“As well as having amazing acoustics, the church has also been the perfect place to film videos as it has a stunning backdrop.”

The Victorian church building is the third on the site, replacing previously erected early English and Norman sites. It celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2015.

Designed by Scottish born architect William Armstrong, it was built between 1864/65 after a reorganisation of the east and west parts of the Wretham estate.

Its priest-in-charge, the Rev Simon Richardson, has given his full permission for Miss Peck to use the village church to record her latest Facebook videos.

He said: “While most churches really lend themselves to good acoustics, St Ethelbert’s is unique in that is also offers a beautiful backdrop and is on the edge of a pretty and quiet village.”

As well as being a full-time performer, Miss Peck is a contemporary vocal coach and teacher.

She graduated from The Academy of Contemporary Music aged 20 and has previously performed in supporting acts for Little Mix, Ella Eyre, and Jess Glynne.
