Plans for new recycling facility in Burrell Way, Thetford.

The proposed site is located at the Burrell Way industrial estate in Thetford at a former skip manufacturing business which has been in operation since the 1980s. 

Suffolk-based SunSkips plans to create a facility to recycle aggregate building materials for use in construction, which will manage 100,000 tonnes of waste per year.

Director Max Stuart said: "This will be a modern recycling facility which will be very good for the recycling needs in the county and help prevent construction waste from entering landfill sites."

In the application, the company said the centre will reduce the need for "virgin" aggregate and help to "conserve the county’s depleting natural resources."

Aggregate includes basic materials like sand, crushed or broken stone and gravel which is used extensively in the construction industry. 

Part of the existing building will be demolished to make way for the recycling centre.

Developers say a small number of HGVs will operate to and from the site to transport materials.

A noise assessment has concluded that the facility is unlikely to create excessive noise for nearby homes.

The plans come amid increasing demand for recycling centres in Norfolk, with council bosses currently searching for suitable land where they can build two replacement recycling centres.

Developers say the new site will help meet the need for building materials in the county amid several major housing developments and the growth of the A11 'tech corridor.'

People have until July 6, 2023, to comment on the proposals.
