Five new homes are to be constructed on a builders’ yard in Thetford - despite concern from neighbours about the area becoming overdeveloped.

The Kybird Builders yard, accessed from Glebe Close, will be transformed to include two bungalows, along with one detached and two semi-detached houses.

Permission for the development was granted at a meeting of Breckland Council’s planning committee on Tuesday, November 1.

One neighbour on Vicarage Road said the proposal represented a “pile ‘em high" attitude to development in the town, but the developer’s agent pointed out that the scheme had already been reduced from six homes to five.

Local Labour councillor Susan Dowling said that while she supported the principle of developing brownfield land, she still thought the development was too cramped and should be reduced further, to four homes.

However, the committee voted by a majority in favour of the project, following the recommendation of the council’s planning officers.
