The head teacher of a Swaffham high school has been suspended pending an investigation into her management.

Yvonne Srodzinski, who has been head of Hamond's High School in Swaffham for more than six years, was suspended by the school governors earlier this month.

Last night neither the children's services department at Norfolk County Council nor governors at the school would give the exact reason from her suspension but both said it had been done to “allow a fair and thorough investigation” to be carried out.

As an interim measure the current head of Attleborough High School, Stuart Bailey, has been drafted in to take over the day to day running of the 700 pupil school.

In a statement Fred Corbett, deputy director of children's services, said: “We can confirm that Yvonne Srodzinski has been suspended pending investigation.

“The investigation is around management issues and in no way relates to the welfare of pupils.

“I would like to stress that the decision to suspend Yvonne Srodzinski was a neutral act.

“We are following the normal procedure when we have to investigate the complex issues around the running of a school, including that of the school's finances. It is not used to imply blame or to imply how the investigation will conclude.

“The head teacher is still a full employee and her suspension is to aid our investigation.

“Suspension is carried out in the interests of the member of staff and the school to allow a fair and thorough investigation. It is not possible at this stage to say how long the suspension will last but we will deal with matters as quickly as possible.

“Stuart Bailey has been appointed to take on the role of head teacher during this interim period.”

During her tenure as head Mrs Srodzinski has overseen a 10m redevelopment of Hamond's High which is now in its final stages.

The project has seen a new modern school built around the old 1950s buildings on the Brandon Road site while children continued to be educated there.

The school is now bidding for foundation status which governors argue will give it the flexibility to maximise its assets and give the governing body more control.

In January inspectors gave Hamond's a “satisfactory” grading in all areas of its latest Ofsted report.

Inspectors said that building work and staffing problems at the school had had a detrimental impact on pupils' performance with some groups of students not making sufficient progress.

However, they said that the school was now recovering from the difficulties and concluded that the head teacher and senior leadership team were clearly focused and raising standards.

Heather Nunn, chairman of governors at Hamond's said: “The decision to suspend Mrs Srodzinski has not been taken lightly, and I would like to stress that suspension is a neutral act carried out to allow the investigation to take place.

"In the meantime I am grateful to the governors of Attleborough High School for releasing Stuart Bailey to us at this time.

“I am confident he will ensure that the school continues to function in the usual way for the benefit of all students and staff.

"The governing body will work closely with Norfolk County Council in order to ensure the matter is dealt with appropriately.

“I would like to reiterate that this investigation in no way relates to the welfare of students, but, as the investigation is ongoing, I am unable to be more specific about the nature of the allegations.”
