Eight giant statues of squirrels decorated by school children will proudly sit in Thetford’s King’s House Gardens for the next fortnight.
The statues are part of the annual Nutty School Art Competition run by Shadwell.
Schools in Thetford and surrounding villages were given a statue to decorate before they were judged at a special event by Shadwell finance director Chris Kennard and Thetford mayor Denis Crawford.
The winning statue, Hazel Nut, was from Bishop’s Academy, Thetford who won £2,000. Second placed Redcastle Family School, Thetford, won £1,000 for their entry Conserve & Preserve.
Coming in third was Raleigh Infant School and Nursery, Thetford, who were awarded £500.
Barnham Primary School’s Ruth, Skittles by Drake Infant School and Nursery, Thetford, East Harling Primary School’s Spirit, Acorn by Norwich Road Academy and Wirrel by Admirals Academy, both in Thetford, were highly commended and won £100.
Mr Kennard said: “Congratulations must be given to all the children, who created such a colourful display and imaginative approach.”
Liz Russell, deputy headteacher at Redcastle Family School, said: “We’re delighted to have taken part in this great community event and are thrilled to come second.
“Thanks to Shadwell for sponsoring this event, we’re already thinking about next year.”
The squirrels will be on display until the week starting September 4 after which they will be auctioned to raise funds.
