History will become child's play when a cash investment of more than £100,000 creates a flagship play area in Thetford.

After almost two years of detailed work, the project to provide the town's Castle Park play area with new equipment has moved a step nearer reality after Breckland planners agreed to give planning consent for siting the new equipment, which includes play apparatus for children and teenagers up to 16.

The Castle Hill area includes remains of a motte and bailey castle, iron-age earthworks and site of an Augustinian friary.

The scheme has attracted a £112,000 funding package, with most of the cash coming from a Big Lottery award.

It is hoped to start the six-week programme of work in November but the completion could be delayed if there are any significant finds unearthed in an archaeological dig.

Town manager Susan Glossop said the area is set to become the "flagship" play area for Thetford.
