Police urged villagers to be vigilant after a suspected rogue trader called at a home at Feltwell.
A man claiming to be from the council called at a property in Lodge Road at 11.30am on Thursday asking to see the water meter.
The householder refused the bogus caller entry after he fail to provide identification and the council confirmed that it had no-one operating in the area at the time.
The caller was described as white, in his forties, stocky with thinning black hair and wearing a fluorescent jacket.
