Robert Wright enjoys a stage adaptation of one of literature’s best-loved adventure stories.

The Theatre Royal’s own Young Company’s presentation of this classic tale by Robert Louis Stevenson was a bold, vibrant, and exciting show with a slant all of its own.

For a start Jim was a ‘lass’ and over half the crew were females who clearly outshone the men in all quarters - and what an enlightened approach this was.

The cast - ranging from eight to 21 years - was so enthusiastic you were drawn along with it and everyone had an important role.

The choreography, often shoulder to shoulder, was superb and the music and singing was well co-ordinated.

It is a busy stage with most of the cast taking up different positions and remaining on stage throughout which added to the impact.

Ah, and we must not forget the adorable parrot who seemed larger than life. It all added up to such a fun show.
