Thetford Town knew a tough game would be on the cards against a visiting Lowestoft Railway side pushing for promotion and so it proved, with the game ending 3-3.

The game started with end-to-end action and the home team forcing a short corner after 10 minutes which saw Reece Laffar convert with a trademark strike from the top of the D.

Lowestoft fought back strongly and it took some sterling defensive work from Dan Gidney, Keith Squires and keeper Kieren Allen to keep them out. The visitors were rewarded however when Robert Hall managed to squeeze the ball home to claim an equaliser. With their tails up, Railway pressed and claimed a disputed second just before half-time.

Thetford were not overawed by their opposition however and came back strongly. Josh Harpur, Michael Ogden and James Burt made strong runs through midfield to keep Lowestoft on the back foot. This effort was rewarded with a lovely ball into the D from Squires, with Laffar quickest to react to make it 2-2.

The visitors were clearly frustrated with their lack of progress and some overly robust tackling led to a penalty corner for Thetford which was dispatched by Squires.

Lowestoft then went with an all-out attack and gained an equaliser with a double deflection from a ball into the D.

Thetford next play Bury St Edmunds III away and look to continue the unbeaten run in 2018. Thetford Ladies went down 2-0 at Norwich City VI in the Empresa Norfolk League.

Despite tremendous effort from 10 players, the home side were able to clinch a win.

Defenders Sharon Brimson, Bethany Rolfe and Leanne Reynolds were strong and calm, keeping the attackers in check.

The first goal came from a short corner, followed about 10 minutes later with a reverse stick shot in open play.

However, in the second half, the home side got no chances. Kathy Hammond ran hard, often dropping back to support and being on the end of a few chances.

Sarah Nichol, Abbie Cozens and Anna Ridsdill Smith were excellent in midfield, with Cozens and Ridsdill Smith particularly tenacious, putting together some good moves and beating players to make ground.

Player of the match: Bethany Rolfe.
