While the Europeans were completing a superb win in the Ryder Cup in Paris, Thetford’s Jess Dixon and Kath Malvern were also creating a little slice of golfing history.

They beat holders Royal Cromer in the final of the Carrick Trophy for the club’s first win in the County Ladies’ Foursomes Championship, which has been held since 1979.

The final was played at Swaffham and although it was a very close match against Tracey Williamson and Sue Roe, Dixon and Malvern were never behind.

At one stage they had built up a three-hole lead but that was cut back to one by the time they reached the 16th tee. But a win there meant a half at the 17th was good enough to win the trophy with a 2&1 success.

Dixon had played the earlier rounds with Shelly Pleasance but a back problem meant she had to drop out of the final, with Malvern proving an excellent replacement.

There’s another big county occasion on Sunday, with Dunston Hall taking on Barnham Broom in the final of the Gillieson Cup. The match is being staged at Eaton, with the action getting under way just before 12.30pm.

On the men’s amateur scene players are gearing up for a big weekend of their own, with the Norfolk CGU’s Order of Merit matchplay finals being played at Heacham Manor on October 13 and 14, with the action getting under at 8am and 12.40pm on both days.

There is a scratch and handicap competition, with 16 players doing battle in each.

Scratch draw: Tom Carding (Gt Yarmouth & Caister) v Joe Robinson (Royal Norwich), Carl Green (Gt Yarmouth & Caister) v Dylan Green (Costessey Park), Kevin Webb (Costessey Park) v Aiden Tanner (Costessey Park), Jack Cullington (Bawburgh) v Darren Abbs (Royal Norwich), Iain Yule (King’s Lynn) v Kale Heath (King’s Lynn), Richard Wilson (Dereham) v James Lester (Mundesley), James Hazel (Sprowston Manor) v Mitch Smith (Royal Cromer), Warren Bates (Heacham Manor) v Bruce McQuade (Royal Norwich).

Handicap draw: Joe Ellis (King’s Lynn) v Phil Hacking (Royal Cromer), Jacob Jeary (Sprowston Manor) v Andy Ware (Ryston Park), Ethan Richmond (Sprowston Manor) v Warren Blackwell (Costessey Park), Sean Rafferty (Costessey Park) v Josh Simpson (King’s Lynn), Charlie Green (Bawburgh) v Paul Donaghy (Costessey Park), Nathan Ryan (Gt Yarmouth & Caister) v Ian Rafferty (Costessey Park), Tyler Crosby (Dunston Hall) v Charlie Woodward (Barnham Broom), James Tipling (Sheringham) v Casey Patterson (Royal Cromer).
