Tennis fever will grip Hunstanton again tomorrow when the town’s annual tournament gets underway.

The popular seaside resort’s prestigious event, thought to be in its 92nd year, is a sanctioned Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) tournament and attracts thousands of players.

Competitors from all over England will be joined by entrants from France, Spain and Bermuda to take part in the grass-based tournament which is now considered to be the largest of its kind in the country - even outstaging Wimbledon for its size and number of matches played.

This year has seen a small decline in the number of competitors entering, around 1,050, with numbers down in the under 18-age group events. The remainder of the junior entry is still well up, especially in the under-14 boys age group where there are 128 in the singles competition with a reserve waiting list.

Norfolk stars Harry Weeds and Hollie Robinson are top seeds in their gender’s open singles classes.

The 2012 Hunstanton Lawn Tennis Tournament runs from tomorrow to Saturday’s finals day. Play commences at 9.30pm every morning and concludes when the light becomes too poor to play.
