Sprowston woman’s virtual holiday to London will help bring the Olympics closer to home

Visitors from across the globe will be heading to London this summer for the Olympics – but for people unable to travel to the capital a virtual alternative has been created by Sprowston woman Claire Wade.

Twenty-nine-year-old Miss Wade’s two-week online London holiday package is the latest virtual experience she is offering via her social enterprise Holidays From Home, which aims to bring vacations and events to people who have difficulty leaving their homes because of illness, disability or other reasons.

Miss Wade came up with the idea for Holidays From Home when she was bed-bound for six years with severe ME and has previously created online trips to Australia and New York.

She said the virtual London trip would run throughout the Olympics and there would be set times for people to meet up online to chat and enjoy the trip together.

“Each day we are going to be doing something different. We will go to a West End show and there will be a description to help people imagine they are at the theatre and then suggested films to watch, like Grease or Chicago.

“We are going to have virtual afternoon tea at The Dorchester, and there will be recipes for people to bake scones and little cakes.

“A lot of museums have online experiences, so we are going to be encouraging people to visit them, like the Natural History Museum, the British Museum and the Science Museum.”

She said she was going to suggest people watch some of the Olympic events, including the opening and closing ceremonies, and chat on Facebook about them, and she said she was also going to encourage people to have their own versions of the Olympic Games at home.

“We’re suggesting throwing paper plates for the discus, throwing feathers or straws for the javelin, having relay races and creating assault courses in the garden,” she said.

“I’m really looking forward to the trip.

“I am going to be like the tour guide and my family will also be joining in with me at different parts too.”
