There has been reports of nighthawking - illegal metal detecting on historical sites - which have taken place in an area of Thetford Forest.

The incident is believed to have involved seven men and to have taken place around Weeting Castle area over three consecutive nights towards the end of January and beginning of February.

Roger Woods, communications manager from the Forestry Commission, said the matter is currently under police investigation.

He added: “Metal detecting on Forestry Commission sites is not permitted and we have not allowed it for many years because of the heritage protected sites.

“It could damage hidden heritage under the ground. Given the nature of the site and the historic bits under the ground.

“If anybody does see metal detectors they need to report it to the police.”

If you believe a rural crime is taking place then call the police on 999.
