Two police officers were spat at after they were called to a domestic incident in Thetford on Sunday evening.

The officers were called to an address in the town yesterday at 6.20pm regarding a domestic incident.

A police spokesman said: “Upon officers arriving on scene, the male party has fled the address and has been detained nearby. During his arrest he has assaulted two officers by spitting in their faces.”

The man was taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre where he was further arrested for criminal damage to a police vehicle.

As of Sunday night he was awaiting an interview.

Norfolk’s police and crime commissioner Lorne Green said on Twitter the incident was “totally unacceptable” and a “sad commentary on some in our society”.

Last month, this newspaper reported the shocking rise in assaults on police officers in Norfolk, with more than one incident happening every day.

In the past year more than 430 Norfolk police officers have been assaulted in the line of duty.

Previously, Norfolk’s chief constable Simon Bailey said: “Officers routinely face danger. This is the nature of police work and we accept that, doing the job we do, there will be occasions when officers suffer injuries.

“However, in recent years there has been a noticeable decline in public attitude towards policing, with some in society feeling it is acceptable to be aggressive, abusive and violent towards police officers when they are simply trying to carry out their duties.”

Mr Bailey said he was concerned about the number of assaults on police officers.
