Thetford Town Council are seeking graziers to help manage the growth of native Breckland plants on Barnham Common.

As part of the major landscaping project at the common, tree felling and the clearing of invasive scrub are taking place.

Fencing has been put up ready for when the animals, which will eventually be cattle and sheep, are introduced to the common for conservational grazing.

It is hoped the animals will be introduced onto the land in March or April.

Once the rare grassland heath has been grazed it should produce a varied grass sward and open patches suitable for many of the Brecks specialities.

Although owned by the town council, the land is a common designated as open access land and means the public has a right of access that is protected by law.

A public consultation is planned to be held by the council in March.

The council would like to hear from anyone who would been keen to graze their animals on the land.

The person would have to have a proven track record of managing a variety of grazing animals, provide a year’s commitment to grazing and provide evidence of appropriate insurance.

For more information, contact Roz Barnett at Thetford Town Council on 01842 770253.
