A lorry driver was left with serious injuries after a crash with a van which closed a road for seven hours yesterday (Tuesday).

Scores of railway sleepers covered the A1065 at Hilborough near Mundford from 3pm and local diversions were put in place. The road reopened at 10pm.

The 34-year-old lorry driver was airlifted to Addenbrooke's hospital with suspected abdominal injuries and fractures to his arms and legs.

The driver of the van was taken to the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds. His injuries were unknown.

Fire crews from Swaffham, Watton, Methwold, Thetford and Kings Lynn attended the scene, alongside two air ambulances, a land ambulance and emergency medical charity Magpas.

Magpas chairman and volunteer doctor, Ben Teasdale, said: “All the emergency services worked together to give the patient the best possible chance of making a good recovery. “With an incident like this, it's essential that expert medical care is delivered quickly at the scene before the patient is transferred to the most appropriate hospital to treat his injuries.”

Chief executive of the East Anglian Air Ambulance, Simon Gray, added: “This was a very serious road traffic collision. Our thoughts are with those injured and their families at this difficult time.”
